Today in West Civ we had a little time in the beginning to do what we want. Mr. Schick also gave us a pop quiz I probably failed. I hate when we have pop quizzes and they hurt my grade. This is going to hurt my grade and that really can't happen. Overall, I did not like class today at all.

                                                     West Civ

Today in West Civ we watched a video on Rome. This video was all about Tibious and how his father died and he is taking over now. It tells us in the beginning that Tibious doesn't know but he will die in 20 years by being murdered by the aristocrats. He was later murdered because he started a revolution in Rome. The video also showed how aristocrats could just take poor people's land. Furthermore, Tibious did not like that. Overall, I liked the video so far.

The video is really long and I hope we can finish it in class so I don't have to watch more at home. On the other hand, we also had a talk about the JC news. Mr. Schick does the JC news and someone in our class was going to be featured, but not anymore. I found the part of the video that I watched was very interesting and had some really good facts about Rome. This is a video I am going to watch again before I take the test.

Today in West Civ we had a project day. This is the first day we have had our full group here. Our idea is to make a program of different things they did in Rome. So far we have everything taking place at the Circus Maximus. Below I have some of the facts we have on the Circus Maximus so far.

The circus maximus:

  • IA ancient Rome Chariot racing stadium
  • constructed in the 6th century BCE
  • It is that largest stadium in ancient Rome
  • It could fit 250,000 people which was one quarter of Rome’s population
  • history goes back to the 6th century when Tarquinius Priscus made a track in between Palatine and Aventine hills
  • 329 BC it was built by more things were being added
  • In 31 bc the first fire happened there was a total of three fires

Circus Maximus
  • Romulus started the chariot races there, however they were said to be distracting because no one would focus on anything else than the chariot races
  • Races took place on both sides of the Aventine and Palatine hills
  • it is thought to be found in the 6th century by Tarquinius Priscus and the fifth king of Rome
  • There were three fires that burnt the circus Maximus it burnt because it was made out of wood and wood is very flamable
  • There were also other things besides chariot races in the Circus Maximus
  • http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=genpub;idno=ACU3468.0001.001
  • http://penelope.uchicago.edu/~grout/encyclopaedia_romana/circusmaximus/circusmaximus.html
Today in class we tried researching about four different places in Rome. Sky and I did the research together, however when it came to citing our sources it was very hard. We found a very good knowledgeble cite however the sources were mostly books. Therefore we would have to go to the book and get the information out of the book that we want and its a big process. However, I also learned that .edu and .gov websites are the best to use. Overall, today I learned a lot in class.

Today on West Civ we worked on our project. Furthermore, only Skylar, and I wee here today in our group. We have the idea to make a program for different things in Rome. When we present we are going to read the different events for that day and where they are. Furthermore, then we will elaborate all the information about them. Today we spent time looking up facts and writing them down for our program. Overall, we had a successful class today.

                                                               West Civ

Today in West Civ we looked at the lyrics from the song Mr.Schick wrote. I thought it was fun to look at the lyrics and get a better understanding. I will be trying to learn the song before the test. I think it would really help me. Also I find it easier to learn a song than to learn and memorize notes. Overall, I am going to start learning the song so I do well on our test.

Gabriella Spilker                                                                                                             4/22/15

                                                                West Civ

Today in West Civ we took notes and Mr.Schick rapped for us. The whole rap was about Rome and different facts we should know. I thought this was a really cool and interesting way to learn. It will be a fun way to memorize facts when it comes to taking a test. Mr.Schick did the rap to the song Low by Flo-rida. I love that song and thought it was really funny when he did the rap to that song. Overall, I will defiantly be using his rap to help me study for the test!

Gabriella Spilker                                                                                              4/20/15

                                                        West Civ

Today in West Civ we took notes about Rome. Below I have listed some of the notes I took today.

  • Etruscan, Greeks, Latin all settle on the peninsula
  • the Greek colonies are on the tiber river
  • indo European tribes moved into the Italian peninsula and some settled along the tiber river creating Rome the city state
  • there was also a myth about how Rome was found the myth was about the twin brothers of remus and Romulus there mother got pregnant with them from the God Mars. However, they were abandoned and sent down a river. Then all the sudden a she-wolf saved them and raised the kids. Later on a Shepard and his wife found the boys and then the boys were natural leaders. They went back and killed the person who abandoned them and then fought over which hill they would have. While they were fighting Romulus kills Remus and then he finds Rome.
  • The Etruscan people were originally from the east but had settled in north Italy were an early influence on the Romans
  • The Romans were also influenced by the Greeks
  • They learned the alphabet and city state organization
  • Originally Rome was a monarchy but over threw the monarchy in 500 BC
  • each year they elect 2 senate
  • they can serve for a total of 1 year
  • and if they are in total crisis they will only have one but they can only serve for 6 months
  • they did not want just one person getting all the power

Today in West Civ we got in groups for our Rome project. My group is me, Immanuel, and Skylar. We are going to focus our project on Roman architect and art. One idea we had was to make a mosaic. We could make a Roman mosaic and talk about it. Furthermore, we can build our own statues. Overall, I think we are going to do really well on our project.

Gabriella Spilker                                                                                                           4/16/15

                                                                West Civ

Today in West Civ we watched a video on the allegory of Plato. This video was confusing, however I got most of the video and what it meant. These people were in the basement and couldn't move their heads. However, one day someone let one free and he looked in the light and was almost blinded. He then reported back to the other people and they told him he was silly and to stop. The reason he did this was because they had been taught that it was dark and that nothing else was out there. Overall, this video was really confusing but good.

Today in west cive we talked a lot about grammar and english. Furthermore, I did not know that Mr.Schick was an english teacher before a social studies one. I felt like I was in english class today. This wasn't a bad ting, however, I dislike english and I am not good at it. Overall, we really did not do a lot, but talk about grammar today in West Civ.

                                                                        West Civ

Today in West Civ we continued to work on our paper. My group made a lot of progress and we only have a few paragraphs left to write. I think we could get a good grade on our paper. I also think our paper will be better than our power point. I wrote the first two paragraphs for our project today. I will also probably help write the conclusions paragraph with my group. We all work really well together and do our share of the paper. Overall, I like this project.

There isn't a lot of information on Homer, however I think my group could write a good paper. Furthermore, I am taking the first two days to write the paper and the last day to watch the video. I think this method is the best method for success.

We have three days to write this paper and we have to watch a video in those days. I think it will be easy because we have three people in a group. Overall, hopefully we will be successful with our paper.

Overall, I was happy with my group however, I wish we could have found more information. Homer was a very hard subject to have and there really wasn't a lot of information.

Today in West Civ we continued taking notes on Greece. Furthermore, we also planned another party. This time the party is for Luke's birthday, hopefully everyone remembers and bring in their stuff! Down below I have listed some facts I learned today.

  • The aristocrats basically ran Greece in the seventh and sixth century BCE
  • a Symposium is a big party for men only there are no women they all gather and have wine and food while discussing politics
  • the only women allowed was the entertainment
  • no lower class was allowed
  • only certain men sometimes not even some aristocrats
  • tyrant- was someone who ruled outside the polis
  • a tyrant now is a leader who is abusive or oppressive
  • Hippias was a tyrant who ruled from 527-510 BCE
  • his brother was murdered and when that happened he got very upset and then his rule went downhill
  •  He was eventually expelled from Athens......that's the worst punishment

                                                                    West Civ

Today in West Civ we had a project day. Homer is a really hard subject, however I think we have enough information to get a good grade. Finding stuff on Homer was a lot harder then I thought. I think I'm going to have to continue my research at home and try and find something interesting. Overall, today I got a lot done, but I need to get more information to get a better grade.

Today in West Civ we had a project day. I have Homer for my project, and it's really hard. I find some information, however it's really hard to find good information. Furthermore, I think my group will do really good on this project. Overall, as long as we find good information and stay focused we will be fine.

Furthermore, we are also writing a 1,000 word paper to go along with it. I usually don't like group projects however I have a good group and I hope we do really good. My group is me Gabby, and Megan. We picked Homer and that's what our project will be on.

                                                                    West Civ

Today in West Civ I took my test on Ancient Egypt. I thought the test was hard and I did't do as good as I wanted to. On the other hand, we also took notes on ancient Greece below I have listed things I learned today.

  • Greece mountains cover 3/4 of Greece
  • there is approximately approximately 1400 islands in the Adriatic, Ionian, and Aegean Seas
  • They didn't have a lot of natural resources so they had to trade
  • only 20% is good for farming
  • greek diet consits of grains, grapes and olives
  • the lack of resources probably led to Greek colonization

                                                                Socrates

Socrates was a Greek philosopher born in 407 BC in Athens, Greece. Socrates invented the Socratic method which was to ask and answer questions. Socrates was also sentenced to death for false teachings and corrupting the youth. Socrates could have escaped however, he didn't and stood up for what he believed in. If I was him I would have just escaped. However, he taught us to never give up and to stand up for what you believe in. Overall, Socrates was a great example to all people.

                                                         West Civ

Today in class we started out talking about cyber days. When Mr.Schick gives us cyber days he has to turn it into the head of the department. That is why every teacher gives us at least 20 minutes of work. Furthermore, I hope we have off tomorrow. I don't like cyber day that much, but as long as we get out of school early I'm okay with it. Overall, I hope we don't have school tomorrow or Friday.

Today in West Civ we played this really hard game, I didn't like it. However, my group finished with a B so that was really good! I came in late to class and still managed to get a good grade. Furthermore, I still don't like the game though. The game was really difficult and you needed to guess right. Overall, it was an okay class.

Gabriella Spilker                                                                                                                                                                                                           Cyber Day

For our blog today we have to write down five technological inventions we thought were important and why.

1. Ancient Egyptian Writing- This was one of the most important things. They started with drawing pictures on the inside of caves, and then eventually hieroglyphics. These were just like letter s and words. Without the Egyptians we would have letters or words.

2. The Calender- We wouldn't know when anything was or what day it was without the calender. Back when the Egyptians made the calender they used it to know when the Nile was going to flood every year, and for other things like that. Today we use a calender to know what day it is, and to know when things are.

3. Eye makeup- The Egyptians wore eye makeup like we wear sunglasses. Both men and women wore Eye makeup. This makeup helped keep the sin out of their eyes while working outside. Furthermore, we still use eye makeup today!

4. The door lock- Believe it or not the Egyptian are the ones who invented the door lock. When they invented the door lock it was with a key to unlock and lock the door. Furthermore, now all we have to do is turn the lock on the door to lock it. However, who would have know it was from the Egyptians.

5. Haircut and Shaving- Back then they thought hair was nasty and dirty, so they used to cut it off. In ancient Egyptian time having short hair and shaving was fashionable. I couldn't imagine people now a days not being able to shave or get their haircut regularly.

                                                             West Civ

Today in West Civ we continued taking notes. However, I already had these notes in my previous blog, so I don't have a lot to blog about. One think Mr.Schick talked about how upper Egypt was rich and lower Egypt was poor. Also hieroglyphs were stories and hieratic were symbols. There almost like letters. Overall, I already had the notes from the other day, but it was a good refresher so I didn't forget the material.

Today in West Civ we went over the Guns,Steal and Germs test. I did good on that test and got a B. I wish I could have gotten an A, but that's okay. I like when we go over our test so then I know what to study for the exam at the end of the year. I think its a good thing that we do this in class too. Overall, I like going over out test after we take them.

                                                             West Civ

Today in West Civ we took a test about the movie we watched. The test wasn't hard but also wasn't easy. Some of the questions on the test I thought were difficult, however, I hope I picked the best answer. Furthermore, in the future I hope some of the questions get easier. Overall, the test wasn't that bad but I wish the test could have been a little easier.

                                                                  West Civ

Tdoay in West Civ we reviewed for our test on Monday. We have a test Monday on the movie guns, germs, and steal. The main over view of the movie was that they weren't geographically blessed. Not being geographically blessed meaned that there were no domesticated animals, or food. They were eating sago and bananas they didn't have food like we do today. Furthermore, it't very weird seeing people live like we did back in the neolithic age. Overall, I am ready for this test and I hope I get a good grade.

                                                                    West Civ

Today in West Civ we finished the movie we were watching. There wasn't much left so I don' have a lot of notes. They created plaster while building houses. The concept of plaster too a few years but they were the first to invent it. They got the plaster from limestone. Furthermore, fertile crescent slowly decreased and became a land with little trees and no grass. Overall, the whole movie was about how if you were geographically blesses then civilization grew.

                                                                       West Civ

Today in West Civ we continued watching the movie. We mostly talked about domesticated animals. There are 14 main animals they are goats, sheep, pigs, cows, horse, donkey, bactrcian camels, Arabian camels, water buffalo, llamas, reindeer, yaks, mithons, and bali cattle. None of these animals were from Australia, Africa, or North America. The llama was from South America. Furthermore, some animals in the middle east were the cows, pigs, goats, and sheep. It was said that the middle east was geographically blessed.

                                                                West Civ

Today in West Civ we continued to watch the movie we started. Some facts I learned were about the food and who grew what . For example, China grew rice. Furthermore, the Americans grew squash, corn, and beans. Africa grew milit, yams, and surgaum. Also some areas were great geographically were wheat was growing and other great crops. However, there were also places where there was nothing but some bananas and spiders to eat. The motto back then was the more productive crops the more productive civilization. Overall, I learned a lot even thought we didn't get to watch the video a lot today.

                                                                   West Civ

Today in West Civ we watched a movie called, Guns, Germs, and Steal. This movie was based in Papuanewguina this is a remote island near Australia. These people there that are living like we did in the Neolithic age. It was so weird seeing people live that way when we don't. They also had this thing where the white man always has a lot of cargo and we don't. It was strange to hear the people in the video say that. However, if you put us out in the woods and stuff like they are we could never build a house or get enough food to eat. Where as the newguineans could do that and are very talented people. Overall, I really like the movie and I can't wait to see more .

                                                              West Civ

Today in West Civ we reviewed for out test. I like reviewing so I know what to study and what will be on the test. Knowing what I need to study the most and whats exactly on the test makes studying a lot easier. All the key points that we need to know are in all of my other blogs. Blogging what we do in class really helps, because then I have the main points for that day. Overall, I'm going to study really hard tonight and hope I get an A on the test tomorrow.

Gabriella Spilker                                                                                                                1/23/15

                                                          West Civ

Today in West Civ we continued with the early humans. We focused more on where they lived today. There was a district known as Sumer that was located between the Tigris and Euphrates river. When people start to figure out irrigation and other things the population grew by a lot. The Sumerians are the first people who invented the first known form of writing, cuneiform. They also believed in many Gods. When it rained they thought it was the rain God and when it didn't they thought the rain God was mad at them. The Sumerians also invented the first calender Furthermore, they invented time too. On the other hand, they built a temple on a mountain called the Ziggurat. This was for the Gods. Later in Mesopotamia wondering nomads drove domesticated animals south of Sumer in Arabia. King Hammurabi of Babylon created a series of laws known as "Hammurabi's Code." These laws include an "an eye for an eye" and regulations of marriage, divorce, and punishments for all sorts of crimes. As people and places expanded thee were Indo. Indo were Europeans from the grasslands of the Russian steppe who introduced the horse to the Near East. They settled in Asia Minor. Overall, i learned a lot about Mesopotamia in this one class.
